New-to-Tri Programme

Drogheda Triathlon Club are delighted to announce we are operating a New to Triathlon Programme. This is a 12 week tailor made programme aimed at new members to fully support them in their journey to completing a Triathlon Race at the end of May.

It will be a sprint distance which is a 750m swim, followed by a 20km cycle and finished with a 5km run.

We have weekly coached swimming and running sessions along with group cycles at weekends.

All levels are welcome and celebrated in our club as we have a diverse range of abilities, ages and experiences in Triathlon.

FAQ's

We hope to answer some commonly asked questions on the programme here. However should you have any further questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

How much does it cost?

The cost if €100 per person for the 12 week program. It also includes your Triathlon Ireland training license which provides insurance that covers you for all club training. You cannot join any triathlon club without holding this license at a minimum. There are options to have further types of memberships in the future which would include your race day licences.

When does it start?

The plan begins in March, and will continue through to the end of May. If you are unable to partake for all sessions that is ok, you can be given the week's sessions and you can make up for anything you feel you need to do in your own time.

Where can I learn more?

We are hosting an information night for anybody who is interested in joining us on Saturday 22nd of January 2025 in upstairs in Aura Leisure Centre, Marlay's Lane, Drogheda from 5pm-6pm. It's essential you register your interest by clicking the above 'Register your Interest' button as places are limited. If you cannot make the session please contact us by email where we will happily talk you through what's involved.

I have some swim/bike or running experience. Can I still join this program?

Absolutely! We have lots of members currently who only train with the club in one of the three disciplines and have yet to partake in a triathlon themselves but will be partaking on this 'New-to-Tri' journey with you. You will always find people at your level in each of the three disciplines and we're happy to link you up with them and connect you with where you are best placed particularly with the swimming and biking elements.

Do I need to be able to swim?

We would advise that you should be able to swim at least one length of the pool without stopping preferably in front crawl. Once this is possible we can begin helping you build your stamina and improving technique.

What do I need to start?

You will need the basics, a pair of running shoes, a bike and helmet and some goggles and a swim hat for the pool. Most triathlon races in Ireland would require a wetsuit to be worn during a race which provides extra buoyancy and security to those swimming.

Will I have support?

Yes. There will be lots of support for you, both during training and on your race day. We all had to start somewhere and Drogheda Triathlon Club members are very supportive of those looking to begin their journeys in Triathlon. Be it offering advice, helping with training or lending out gear to get you on your way - never be afraid to ask a question!

What should I expect?

You should expect to be proud of yourself! Triathlon is three sports and building up your stamina and learning along the way isn't for everybody, but it is for lots of people! We are a community of different professions, ages, experiences and fitness but we come together with a shared passion for triathlon and that is how we continue to grow as a community.
